a riding buddy, and what about a triathlon?

For a bit of background, Caius is a racing friend from the part of it where it was the most enjoyable. There was a group of us from the club who regularly came out every race weekend, camped and hotel-ed out, and spend all day racing or talking about racing. It was the time we were the most involved in racing as we ever have been. But for various reasons most of us have moved on.

I noticed a post on the club's message board where he was selling his wheels. A lot of us wondered why he had held on to them for so long, since he hadn't been out with his own car for years at an event. I heard the reason he kept them was because as soon as he sold them it would mean that that part of his life is done. He mentioned he was buying another bike and needed the money.

So I asked Caius about his bike and the ride to Montreal he's doing. I've been planning on doing it for ages, but couldn't make this year. He was buying a bike very similar to mine, and it turns out that the ride to Montreal is just meant as a way to help train for a triathlon! Wow!

He started around the same time as me, but has seen a lot more success. He's definitely jumped into it a lot quicker than I have. He's not that different than me, so I'm looking at this thinking that maybe I can do that too. I've thought about running already, but I've never thought about swimming at all. The running is a big challenge for me. Caius told me about how he started running. He was just as bad as me with shin pain and cramps before, but today he ran 5k straight for the first time! It's only been a couple months.

I might not be at the point where I think I'd be able to do a triathlon, especially since I can barely swim recreationally. But I think a duathlon is possible by the end of the year. Maybe I can give it a shot. Tawn did one last year, so if she can do it too... this could be fun! I'll have all winter to learn how to swim. It could work.

It makes sense, because I've always loved riding, I've been pretty cool with running (when I was in grade 3 I used to wish I could run a marathon), but swimming... that could be a total challenge.

Training ride on Sunday is for Caius' trip to Montreal. It's a relatively short distance, but it's definitely still going to be a challenge. I hope I can keep up, but I'm so excited. It might kill my Saturday night a bit, but it'll be so worth it.
