rice cooking and the end of tv

rice cooking
I bought a rice cooker on my trip to Loblaws. It was also my first time buying food after I started watching what I'm eating. I had to stop myself from buying a few things, but it wasn't too hard. The stuff I make myself is usually pretty decent, it's the food I buy when I go out that gets me into trouble.

On my way home I was thinking about how this is the first appliance I've bought where I actually need to read the manual. I had absolutely no idea how it worked. Of course the instructions were missing. It's a Betty Crocker model, so I figured it would have been pretty easy to find it online, but I had no luck. I found a couple other posts of people looking for manuals for it as well. Ugh. I gambled and found out it's quite easy. Almost too easy. I should probably be embarassed, but I never claimed to be a kitchen king.

the end of tv
I just read this post about someone planning on ditching his cable. I've been going through exactly the same thing lately. I bought an antenna for getting over-the-air TV (specifically HDTV) hoping I could cancel my $100 a month cable bill. It's ridiculous that I have to pay that much so I can watch a few shows. I've been weaning myself off my cable box, and I really haven't missed it much. It just gets filled with Futurama and Family Guy episodes which I really have no time to keep on top of. I'd rather buy the DVDs and not be rushed to watch them all at once.

Over-the-air I've been able to record quite a few shows. I've stopped being so picky about the shows I've been watching. Because CFTO refuses to fix their PSIP info I can't view Corner Gas or any of their other shows. Not to mention for some inexplicable reason even though they own the Canadian broadcasting rights to Scrubs they refuse to show it. The Buffalo channels other than Fox aren't solid enough to rely on, since I'm stuck with an antenna on my balcony (which is blocked by another building). So now I'm waiting for Global and Omni to start broadcasting (which they keep delaying). It should be more than enough TV for me.

I'm not going to miss much. The only thing is I might miss some hockey games on TSN. But if I really want to watch a game I can walk five minutes down the street to the bar. It's no big deal. It's just hard to get off my ass to convince myself to actually go through with it.

I LOVE my rice cooker. I think it's totally amazing that there's an appliance where you can put food into it, not pay attention to it for like 20 minutes, and when you come back, you have food. Who would have thunk?

Apparently, there's other appliances like this as well, like slow cookers/crock pots - with those, you can throw a bunch of stuff in there in the morning and when you come home at night, suddenly, it's dinner.

    It's like magic! :)

(I think I need to link to your blog from my blog and maybe get you some traffic - it's lonesome being your only commenter though I do feel special! :).

You'll love the rice cooker and Tawny's right in regards to slow cookers, mine performs miracles every week. I'm actually thinking of getting a second one!
